Treating your Timbers

Post on 28th March 2023

Treating your timber fence panels, slats, gates or other timber products is one of the best ways to keep them looking fresh and protect them from the elements. Treating your timber can give an attractive finish, but also, it can add extended life to your wood. With a little effort, you can ensure that your fence panels look great and are protected for years.

Depending on the desired finish, there are a few different ways to treat your fence. Here’s what you need to know:

Oil-based stains? These tend to be the best option when treating timber fence panels. Oil-based stains penetrate deep into the wood, providing excellent protection from the elements. These should be reapplied every 1-2 years to maintain their protective benefits.

Our Armourflex UV Protection Oil is formulated with just the correct ratio of UV absorbers and antioxidants to deflect hazardous sun rays as heat. This oil forms a shielding barrier for your wood, ensuring that its colour will remain consistent while giving it an appealing glow at the same time.

Wood preservatives  Wood preservatives provide extra protection against wood rot and fungi. They don’t usually change the colour of your fence panels, but they will help to protect the wood against moisture and mildew. As with oil-based stains, these should be reapplied every 1-2 years for maximum protection.

Barrettine’s Wood Protector is the perfect solution for keeping rough, sawn, or smooth timber sealed and protected. This wood sealer contains water-repellent resins and a biocide film preserver to keep mould/algae away from the surface of your wood and reduce decay and swelling.

Paints  Paints offer excellent protection against weathering, rot and insect damage and provide a vivid colour to your fence panels. Depending on the application, they tend to last longer than stains or preservatives, with reapplication needed every 5 to 15 years.

Owatrol Solid Colour Stain offers unparalleled protection against the elements, with up to 15 years of lasting defence on upright wood surfaces and five years when applied horizontally onto decking. With four colours, it’s never been easier to enhance your outdoor areas while ensuring they remain protected for many years. As a result of Owatrol’s Emulsa-Bond, this product improves adhesion and eliminates the need for extensive preparation and priming.

Product Application

You will need a quality brush or sprayer to apply treatment to your panels. Depending on your product, you may need two or three coats for maximum protection. Make sure to follow the specific instructions for the product being used for the best results.

When treating timber fence panels, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Mask off any areas you don’t want to treat; stains and paints can affect stone, concrete and plants.

2. Prepare your garden by cutting back or strimming any greenery that could infringe on the job.

3. Always test a small, inconspicuous fence area to ensure the colour is desirable.

4. When applying a finish, start at the top of the panel and work your way down; if applying a stain or similar preservative, go with the grain.

Treatment FAQ’s

Please see a selection of the most commonly asked questions regarding the treatment of our timbers.

How do I choose the right treatment for my timber fence panels??

The best treatment for your timber fence panels will depend on the desired finish and how much protection you need from the elements. Oil-based stains offer a deep, rich colour and good protection, whereas wood preservatives provide extra protection against rot and fungi without changing the colour. If you want a vivid finish, paints are a great option and tend to last longer than stains or preservatives.

How often do I need to reapply for fence treatments??

The frequency of reapplication will depend on which product you use, but generally, oil-based stains should be applied every 1-2 years, wood preservatives every 1-2 years and paints every eight years. It’s important to follow the instructions for the specific product being used for the best results.

How should I apply the treatment?

We’d recommend using a soft brush to treat your fence for quality and consistency. A high-quality brush will ensure an even, consistent and simpler job, although a sprayer can still provide decent, quick and easy results.

Regarding how many coats to apply, 23 usually does the trick, but follow the guidance on the specific product you purchase. The absorption qualities of the wood also play a role.
