Gates Installation Guide

Installing a garden gate is quite a simple process, and it can be done quickly with the right tools and materials. This guide will look at how to install a standard garden gate and what steps are required for our range of driveway gates.

Standard Slatted Gates

Step 1: Measure the Opening

Before you begin, ensure your opening is at least 40mm (1 1/2″) larger than the gate itself. This will ensure your gate has enough room to open and close properly. You should factor in this opening when installing your gate posts.

As with the standard gate, before installing your posts, ensure they are treated with wood care products to help safeguard against rotting and insect damage.

You should also check their level before attaching them to the ground using a concrete mix or metal spikes.

Once measured, leave enough room for hinges and other hardware.

Step 2: Choose Your Materials

Once you have measured the opening, you can choose your materials. For standard timber garden gates, you will need two posts and stainless steel fixings such as hinges, screws, nails and a latch.

Step 3: Prepare the Posts

Before installing your posts, make sure they are treated with wood preservatives to protect them from negatives such as rot and decay. You should also check their level before attaching them to the ground using a concrete mix or metal spikes.

Step 4: Attach the Hinges

Once your posts are in place, attach the hinges to one side of the gate using screws or nails, depending on your chosen hinge. Ensure they are securely attached so your gate won’t wobble when opened and closed.

Step 5: Hang Your Gate

Now it’s time to hang your gate! Place it between the two posts and use clamps or an extra pair of hands to hold it in place while attaching it with screws or nails through the pre-drilled holes in the hinges.

Once secure, open and close your gate several times to ensure everything works properly before moving on to the next step.

Step 6: Add Latch & Finishing Touches

Finally, add a latch or lock for extra security if desired. Consider adding decorative touches such as paint or stain for an extra personal touch!

Driveway Gates

Installing a pair of driveway gates will be harder than a standard gate due to the weight and additional hardware required.

As always, should you have any questions regarding the driveway gate installation, our team is on hand to assist.

Step 2:

Place the hinge plates on the horizontal structural brace, ensuring they are centred and level. Mark where the holes will be drilled, remove the hinge plates and drill pilot holes into the timber frame.

Step 3:

Fit the eye bolts into place, securely fastening them with nuts and washers. Measure from the bottom edge of each plate to ground level, then adds an extra size for clearance when opening and closing your gates.

Step 4:

Attach one gate at a time using hinges, ensuring it is level before securing it with stainless steel screws or nails. Use shims between the gate frame and post to ensure no gap between them when closed.

Step 5:

Install a latch or lock onto one gate so it can be opened from either side of your driveway entrance. Ensure it is firmly secured so it won’t come loose over time due to weathering or wear and tear from regular use.

Finally, check all screws and bolts for tightness before using your new gates for the first time!
