Armourflex UV Protection FAQs

Below are some of the most popular questions that we get asked daily. Please get in touch with us directly if you require further info or have other questions.

How long does protection last?

The amount of wear and tear on the wood depends on the degree of exposure to sun, rain, and frost. The product has been tested in the UK under the harshest conditions, with a 45°C sun-facing wall that is fully exposed.

Our test pieces receive maximum UV exposure, as well as exposure to British rain and frost, which necessitates re-coating them once a year. However, it is uncommon for exterior joinery to be positioned at a 45°C angle and typically there is some shade at certain times of the day.

A more practical estimate is that re-coating will likely be necessary every two years for most situations. It is recommended to conduct this maintenance in early Autumn or after the last Spring frost.

How do I apply Armourflex Ultimate UV Protection Oil?

Applying the Armourflex Ultimate UV Protection Oil is easy. Simply follow the instructions on the can, and apply the oil evenly using a brush or roller. You should avoid applying the oil in direct sunlight or on a surface that’s too hot to touch.

Is Armourflex Ultimate UV Protection Oil safe for the environment?

Yes, Armourflex Ultimate UV Protection Oil is safe for the environment. The oil contains no harmful chemicals and is made with natural ingredients, making it an eco-friendly choice for your home’s exterior.

Mould has appeared on the wood. How can I remove this?

Although black mould does not harm wood, it can be unpleasant to look at. To get rid of it, clean the affected area using a soft-bristled brush and clean in the direction of the grain, using our Mould and Mildew Cleaner.

To lower the chances of mould spores growing on wood surfaces, it is recommended to clean the wood with Mould and Mildew Cleaner prior to coating. Even though this product includes a biocide that can stop surface mould growth, it may not be effective enough if the amount of mould spores is extremely high, for instance, in consistently damp environments. The product can also gradually deteriorate with exposure to weather, so it is advisable to apply regular maintenance coats to the surface.

How do I prep the timber for treatment?

In order to prepare the timber for treatment with Armourflex UV Oil, it is important to clean the surface of dirt, grime or mould and allow it to dry completely before applying the oil. Use a sponge, warm water and mild detergent to scrub the wood surface.

Once done, rinse clean with fresh water and leave it to dry before applying the oil. For best results, apply two coats of the oil allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next layer. This will ensure maximum coverage and protection of your wood surfaces.

How do I apply the oil?

Armourflex UV Oil can be applied using a brush, roller or sprayer. Apply one coat and allow it to dry completely before applying the second layer for maximum effectiveness. Make sure to avoid applying too much oil as this could block the pores of the wood, resulting in an uneven finish. Once applied, use a cloth to wipe off any excess oil. Allow the two layers to dry before using. This will ensure maximum coverage and protection of your wood surfaces.

Please note: We strongly suggest doing a small test on a specific area to ensure that you are satisfied with the final appearance as the surface may darken depending on the type of timber used. However, this usually fades away over time as the product cures.

How do I maintain the timbers?

We recommend applying a maintenance coat every 12 to 24 months or upon the first signs of weathering to maintain the oil’s effectiveness. It is important to properly clean and prepare the surface with our mould and mildew cleaner before applying a maintenance coat. After cleaning, allow the wood surface to dry completely before applying a new layer.

How can I remove tacky sections and/or white milky marks?

If a milky film is visible on sections of the timber or the oil is tacky on the surface after application, it could mean that there was too much oil applied or that the timber was damp upon application. This can be easily remedied by using a clean cloth and white spirits to gently wipe off the excess oil. Allow the treated area to dry completely before applying a second coat.

It is important to avoid applying too much oil as this could block the pores of the wood, resulting in an uneven finish.
