Siberian Larch Alternatives

Post on 4th January 2023

Unfortunately, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the imposed sanctions on Russia, the Siberian Larch will no longer be available when current stocks run out, which we estimate to be within the next 3-6 months (Summer 2023).

When will Siberian Larch be unavailable?

The UK timber markets can no longer purchase more Siberian Larch, which suggests that distributors will run out of stock within the first and second quarters of 2023. This timeline is a stark reminder that Siberian Larch alternatives should be taken seriously now and not simply as an afterthought.

What is the best alternative for Siberian Larch?

Douglas Fir and Alaskan Yellow Cedar are ideal alternatives for Siberian Larch thanks to their light tones, average 20-year plus life span and durability. They are also FSC-certified, making both options a perfect choice.

Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir is a robust timber often used for exterior projects, such as cladding and fencing. Its stunning colour, grain, high workability and versatility have made it one of the market’s most coveted and widely-used softwood timbers.

Douglas Fir trees have an exceptionally long lifespan, giving them superior strength and durability. These natural properties make it an ideal choice for fence panels, gates and cladding.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar

Yellow cedar is a resilient, long-lasting softwood species from the highest altitudes of North America and Canada that has evolved over centuries to thrive in cold conditions. It belongs to the pine family, one of nature’s slowest-growing varieties.

As a timber, yellow cedar is kiln-dried to enhance its natural properties but hardwearing and often used on boat decks, making it a popular choice for internal and external projects.?
